MY STORY
I was raised by a single mom of three who gave everything to us and nothing to herself. She managed three kids in three different schools, juggled sports, household duties, and every daily responsibility-yet never had time to care for herself. She was often tired and overweight from the constant demands, and I saw firsthand how exhausting it is to try to hold everything together. When I was 15, my mom was diagnosed with cancer, and I suddenly had to step into multiple roles-caregiver, supporter, and sometimes even like a parent to her-while still navigating my own teenage life. Experiencing this taught me an early truth: too often, moms pour endlessly from an empty cup.
My own journey to motherhood has been anything but traditional. I first became a mom through marriage, stepping into the role of bonus mom (stepmom). Blending a family gave me a new perspective on the many ways love makes a mother and taught me the importance of honoring stepmoms, who often step quietly but powerfully into that role. Later, my path took me through heartbreak-infertility, three miscarriages, and grief that felt unbearable-before I finally became a mom again through fostering to adopt.
Through these experiences, I’ve come to see that there is no single path to motherhood-each story is unique, and every journey matters. But what I’ve also learned is that no mom should have to walk her journey alone. Community is not just helpful; it’s essential. When moms come together to share their struggles and triumphs, they find strength, belonging, and the reminder that they are not alone.
This past summer, I spent time interviewing moms across the Treasure Valley. Their stories ranged from joyful beginnings to struggles with postpartum challenges, exhaustion, and isolation. But one common thread wove them all together: a deep longing for a place to share stories, connect, and embrace self-care.
And it’s not just moms. I’ve seen how maternal love shows up in so many ways-through women who may not have children of their own but nurture siblings, nieces, nephews, or friends’ kids. Many of my foster children carried the heavy weight of being “parentified,” stepping into caregiving roles long before they should have had to. I’ve also been deeply moved watching my sister-in-law with my son, loving him with a tenderness that reminds me motherhood is bigger than titles.
That’s why I created The Mama Bear Den. It is a movement. A sanctuary for moms, bonus moms, those on the journey to motherhood, and anyone who is mothering-in every sense of the word. Here, women can pause, recharge, and connect with a community that sees them, supports them, and celebrates them. It’s a place to rest, restore, and roar.
